Black Creek Water Trail
One of the ECC’s top priorities is the maintenance and extension of the Black Creek Water Trail along Lloyd’s portion of the waterway Walt Whitman celebrated as a “stream of hurrying amber.” Created by the ECC and the Town Board, the Water Trail provides recreational opportunities for canoeing and kayaking and facilitates ecological programs for students.
Currently, the trail begins where the Black Creek goes under New Paltz Road and ends in wetlands where the creek enters Chodikee Lake. A Hudson River Estuary Grant allowed the construction of an observation deck and mooring where the creek crosses the Hudson Valley Rail Trail. Future plans call for the trail to extend northwest, using portages and land trails to link creek sections suitable for paddling. The ultimate goal is for the trail to reach the Hudson River outlet in Esopus.
ECC Projects
Other ECC current and planned projects include, but are not limited to:
- Contributing environmental information and counsel to the Town of Lloyd Master Plan and to specific development plans,
- Organizing clean-ups of Lloyd roads and the Black Creek,
- Serving as liaison to other environmental agencies and groups in the region,
- Responding to citizen’s questions about environmental issues,
- Promoting environmental education in schools and at public gatherings,
- Publishing brochures on environmental issues, such as recycling guidelines,
- Honoring individuals and institutions that work toward environmental conservation.
